Workshop on Modernization of Official Statistics in Qatar

The data and statistics requirements for supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the National Development Strategy 2017-2022 call for a transformation of official statistical system in Qatar. Such transformation calls for modernization of statistical business processes, strengthened institutional coordination, effective use of integrated statistical frameworks, innovation in conducting 2020 population and housing census, development of effective tools for dissemination of data . It also calls for partnerships with line Ministries and private sector focusing on using new data sources for SDG and National Development Sector Strategies implementation. Towards this end, Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics is developing a collective vision and framework for action to guide the transformation and reach at a consensus on key action areas to be taken into consideration.

This workshop is organized to facilitate discussions and shed light on the need for modernization of the national statistical system in partnership with various stakeholders. Specially, the workshop will:

  1. Discuss different actions that could be taken by stakeholders to improving the production of accurate reliable and timely statistics to support monitoring the national and international development goals.
  2. Introduce best practices of various countries in modernizing their statistical systems. 
  3. Effectively share of knowledge, practices and technologies in support of the modernization process.

The outcome of the workshop will contribute to the development of a road- map to modernize the National Statistical System in support of the Sustainable Development Agenda and the National Development Strategy 2017-2022 with an aim to achieve a modern more integrated and coordinated statistical system. The workshop objectives will be achieved by building on the findings of the assessment mission conducted early this year by the United Nations Statistical Division and Freelance consultant as a part of the transformative agenda for Official Statistics Project formulated by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).

Targeted Participants

To ensure that the objectives of the workshop are met, the workshop will bring together officials and experts from Qatar line Ministries, Qatar Computing Research Institute at Hamad Bin Khalifa University , NGOs, Regional and International Organizations and best practices from Italy and Poland.

Language of the Workshop​

Simultaneous interpretation from Arabic to English and vice versa will be available during the workshop.
