- General PPI of March 2018, decreased by 0.3% when compared with previous month ( M-O-M).
- General PPI of March 2018, increased by 19.2% when compared with March 2017 ( Y-O-Y).
- PPI of Crude Petroleum and Natural gas production decreased by 0.5%, comparing with previous month.
Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) has released the Monthly Producer Price Index (PPI) of the Industrial sector for March 2018 with the base year 2013. Producer price index covers goods relating to “Mining” (weight: 72.7%), “Manufacturing” (weight: 26.8%), and “Electricity & Water” (weight: 0.5%).
Mining
The PPI of March, 2018 showed an decrease of 0.5% when compared with PPI of February 2018, primarily due to the decrease prices of “Crude petroleum and natural gas” with 0.5%. PPI of March 2018, when compared with its counterpart in the previous year (March 2017), there has been a considerable increase of 23.3%.
Manufacturing
An increase of 0.1% has been recorded in March, 2018, when compared with the previous month’s Manufacturing index (February,2018). The prices increase are seen in: "Dairy products” by 7.5%, followed by “Paper and Paper Products” by 7.2%, “Other chemical products and fibers” by 4.0%, “Basic Metals” by 3.4%, “Basic Chemicals” by 0.5%, and “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.1%. However, decreasing prices are noticed in “Rubber and Plastics products” by 1.8 %, “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 1.1%, “Refined Petroleum Products” by 0.5%, and “Juices” by 0.2%. No monthly change noticed in “Beverages” .
Comparing with the index of counterpart in the previous year (March 2017), “Manufacturing” PPI of March,2018 showed a rise of 11.9%. The major groups which explain this price increase are “Basic Metals” by 25.6%, followed by “Dairy products” by 14.8%, “Other chemical products and fibers” by 14.3%, “Refined Petroleum products” by 13.1%, “Paper and Paper Products” by 10.7%, “Basic Chemicals” by 7.5%, “Grain mill and Other products” by 1.6%, and “Juices” by 0.5%. However, prices fall also noticed in “Rubber and Plastics products” by 6.7%, “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 5.3%, and “Beverages” by 0.9%.
Electricity and Water
The PPI of this group showed an increase of 0.6% compared to February 2018, resulting from an increasing in “Electricity” by 1.8%, and a decreasing in “Water” by 1.3%.
When compared the PPI of March, 2018, to the PPI of March, 2017, showed an increase [Y-o-Y] of 6.4%, affected by a rise in “Electricity” by 12.2% and a fall in “Water” by 1.8% .
Overall Index (PPI of Industrial sector)
The PPI for March, 2018 is estimated at 65.9 points showing a fall when compared with the previous month’s February 2018. On [Y-o-Y] basis, PPI of February, 2018 showed a rise of 19.2% when compared to the PPI of March 2017.
